Titanium in aerospace

Why titanium matters in aerospace

Aerospace has been one of the key drivers of titanium alloy development for more than half a century, and it remains one of the most demanding environments for engineering materials.

Passenger aircraft on the runway

Titanium is valued in aerospace for its high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance and reliable performance under demanding operating conditions. These properties support lighter, more efficient and more durable aircraft structures and components.

Correctly specified and designed, titanium also offers good fatigue performance — important for parts exposed to vibration, pressure cycles and long service life. In modern composite airframes, titanium is often preferred in contact areas because it reduces galvanic corrosion concerns compared with other materials.

Aerospace applications

Titanium is used across many critical areas of an aircraft:

  • structural airframe components
  • landing gear parts
  • engine components such as compressor blades, discs and casings
  • fasteners
  • hydraulic and pneumatic tubing
  • brackets and fittings throughout the fuselage and wings
  • composite-to-metal joints where corrosion compatibility matters
  • MRO replacement parts

In maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), replacement parts must meet the material properties, specifications and certification requirements of the original components.
